Accommodations for students are determined individually with the intention of alleviating or mitigating institutional barriers for a qualified individual to have an equitable opportunity for participation. Therefore, Disability Resources believes it is critical to consider not only formalized evaluative documentation, but also the student narrative and lived experience, as it is often able to offer context that is critical to understanding the request more fully. At times, it is possible that a student may have a documented diagnosis without meeting criteria for a disability because the impact can not be established as effecting a major life activity.

Accommodations do not remove or exclude requirements but allow a disabled student the same opportunity to fully participate and benefit from programs and services as their non-disabled peers.
Disability Resource engages in an interactive process and considers each individual’s functional limitations, history, request and the essential elements of WashU’s programs, services, and activities to determine appropriate accommodations.
